Backyard Soccer Training: A Parent's Guide to Coaching at Home
You don't need turf, cones, or a coaching badge to raise a confident soccer player. You need a small patch of grass, one ball, and a plan. This guide gives you five foundational soccer drills you can run in the backyard — no experience needed.
Why train at home?
Most kids get one or two hours of team practice a week. Real development happens in the reps between practices. Ten focused minutes a day in your backyard, done consistently, will out-perform any occasional private session — and it builds a relationship on top of it.
What you need
- One soccer ball (the right size for your child's age)
- A flat 10×10 ft. area of grass, patio, or driveway
- Two markers (shoes, water bottles, or cones)
- 10 minutes and your full attention
Five foundational drills for small spaces
1. Toe taps (60 seconds)
Ball still in front of them. Tap the top of the ball with the sole of alternating feet as fast as they can. Builds balance, rhythm, and a light touch.
2. Inside–inside dribble (2 minutes)
Push the ball with the inside of the right foot, then the inside of the left, walking pace. This is the single most valuable touch a young player can master.
3. Gate dribbles (2 minutes)
Set two markers a few feet apart. Dribble through the gate, turn, and come back. Add speed once control is clean.
4. Wall passes (3 minutes)
Face a wall or fence. Pass with the inside of the foot, receive with the opposite foot. Alternate feet each rep. Great first touch, great passing weight.
5. Finishing on a target (2 minutes)
Pick a target on the wall or fence. Strike from a short distance. Focus on plant-foot placement and hitting cleanly through the ball.
Make it stick
Consistency beats intensity. Five short backyard sessions a week will do more than one big weekend session. Keep the tone light, celebrate effort, and finish before they want to.
